Larry Kramer (1935-2020) founded Gay Men’s Health Crisis in 1981 with five friends the organization remains one of the world’s largest providers of services to those with AIDS. The play premiered Off-Broadway in 1992 at the Lucille Lortel and was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In the play, Ned reexamines his life as a young gay man while undergoing experimental treatment for AIDS. Pace and Barkin both appeared in the 2011 revival of The Normal Heart. The company will also include Lee Pace as Benjamin, Ellen Barkin as Rena, Eric Bogosian as Richard, Gideon Glick as Alexander, and Josh Hamilton as Dr. Ruffalo previously took on the role in the HBO adaptation of The Normal Heart, directed by Ryan Murphy (whose support The New Group acknowledges in their announcement). Leading the cast of Kramer’s companion play to his The Normal Heart will be Mark Ruffalo as Ned Weeks.
